Practical guide

How to change food
without digestive discomfort

Your dog’s digestive system needs between seven and ten days to adjust to a new formula. An abrupt change often causes loose stools or food refusal.

  1. Days 1 – 2 25% Zen / 75% previous food

Mix one quarter Zen with the usual food. Check stools each morning.

  2. Days 3 – 4 50% Zen / 50% previous food

Half and half. If stools become loose, stay at this stage for two more days before progressing.

  3. Days 5 – 6 75% Zen / 25% previous food

By now, digestion should have settled completely.

  4. Day 7 onwards 100% Zen only

Transition complete. Digestion settles within two weeks; coat shine appears around the fourth week.

Frequently asked questions

Feeding a puppy

Common questions during the first months. Write to us for specific help.

From 4 weeks, when weaning begins. Moisten the kibble with lukewarm water to make a soft mash that the puppy can swallow easily.

By 7 or 8 weeks, most puppies eat dry kibble without moistening. Continue until 12 months for small and medium breeds, or 18 months for large and giant breeds, which develop more slowly.

Puppies have small stomachs and very high energy needs, so divide the daily ration into several meals:

  • Up to 4 months: 4 meals per day
  • 4 to 8 months: 3 meals per day
  • From 8 months: you can move to 2 meals

Keep regular mealtimes. This helps toilet training and prevents hunger peaks that lead to eating too fast.

DHA is an Omega 3 fatty acid forming part of brain and retinal tissue. In the first months, the puppy’s nervous system develops at an unmatched pace, directly dependent on dietary DHA.

Canine nutrition studies associate adequate DHA with better learning and faster responses during early training. It is not an optional extra: it is essential in puppy food.

This is common for the first days after a food change and often resolves itself. Common causes are a rushed transition, overfeeding or the stress of a new home.

If it persists beyond 48 hours, or there is blood, mucus, lethargy or appetite loss, see a vet promptly. Puppies dehydrate much faster than adults.

It depends on breed size, as growth finishes at very different ages:

  • Mini and small breeds: between 10 and 12 months
  • Medium breeds: between 12 and 14 months
  • Large and giant breeds: between 18 and 24 months

Switching too early in large breeds can affect joint development. If unsure, your vet can assess your puppy’s growth.
