A maintenance food covers the needs of a healthy dog. A dietetic food is formulated to to correct a specific problem: here, poor digestion and the absorption problems that come with it.
That is why its protein, fat and mineral levels do not follow the usual proportions, but those suited to that clinical situation.
It is not a medicine, so legally it needs no prescription, but it does need veterinary advice. Using it without a diagnosis can delay finding the real problem and prolong the dog’s discomfort.
Only if the vet says so. Mixing it with the usual food dilutes the formula’s effect and can reintroduce exactly what was being removed.
