Practical guide

How to change food
without digestive discomfort

Your dog’s digestive system needs between seven and ten days to adjust to a new formula. An abrupt change often causes loose stools or food refusal.

  1. Days 1 – 2 25% Zen / 75% previous food

Mix one quarter Zen with the usual food. Check stools each morning.

  2. Days 3 – 4 50% Zen / 50% previous food

Half and half. If stools become loose, stay at this stage for two more days before progressing.

  3. Days 5 – 6 75% Zen / 25% previous food

By now, digestion should have settled completely.

  4. Day 7 onwards 100% Zen only

Transition complete. Digestion settles within two weeks; coat shine appears around the fourth week.

Frequently asked questions

Allergies and intolerances

What to know before switching to a hypoallergenic diet.

A novel protein is one the dog has never eaten. Food allergies arise through sensitisation: the immune system reacts to proteins it knows and has identified as a threat.

Chicken, beef and lamb are the most common dog-food proteins, so they also cause the most reactions. Using an unfamiliar source removes cross-reaction risk and gives the immune system time to settle.

The most common signs affect skin and digestion:

  • Persistent itching, especially ears, paws, groin and tail base
  • Recurring ear infections without a clear infectious cause
  • Redness or lesions from repeated scratching
  • Chronic loose stools or frequent gas
  • Compulsive paw licking

Diagnosis requires an 8–12 week elimination diet supervised by a vet. Blood food-allergy tests have limited reliability and do not replace an elimination diet.

Skin takes time because it must complete its renewal cycle. Usual timeframes are:

  • Digestion: 1 to 2 weeks
  • Reduced itching: 4 to 6 weeks
  • Full skin recovery: 8 to 12 weeks

During this time give no other food: no treats, leftovers or flavoured supplements. One slip restarts the process.

Only if they use the same single protein as the main food. Most commercial treats contain chicken or poultry derivatives, even when not highlighted on the pack.

A practical, risk-free alternative is using the food’s own kibble as training rewards, reserving part of the daily ration for this.

Zen is available through specialist stores, veterinary clinics and authorised distributors across Spain. We do not sell directly online because choosing the right food deserves advice from a professional who knows your dog’s case.
