Practical guide

How to change food
without digestive discomfort

Your dog’s digestive system needs between seven and ten days to adjust to a new formula. An abrupt change often causes loose stools or food refusal.

  1. Days 1 – 2 25% Zen / 75% previous food

Mix one quarter Zen with the usual food. Check stools each morning.

  2. Days 3 – 4 50% Zen / 50% previous food

Half and half. If stools become loose, stay at this stage for two more days before progressing.

  3. Days 5 – 6 75% Zen / 25% previous food

By now, digestion should have settled completely.

  4. Day 7 onwards 100% Zen only

Transition complete. Digestion settles within two weeks; coat shine appears around the fourth week.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

If your question is not answered here, write to us and we will reply within 24 hours.

Dogs are facultative carnivores: they digest animal protein much better than cereal starch. Cereals are commonly used as cheap fillers to lower formula costs, not for a real nutritional benefit.

Removing them gives three measurable results:

  • Better digestibility, meaning firmer, smaller stools
  • Less tartar formation, with less starch fermenting in the mouth
  • Lower allergen load, as wheat and maize are among the most common intolerance triggers

Ingredients are listed by weight before processing. Fresh meat appearing first means it is the largest component of the formula.

The difference between fresh meat and meat meal is important: fresh meat retains intact essential amino acids because it has not undergone high-temperature dehydration. Meat meal is already processed, cheaper and less bioavailable.

It depends on what you are observing:

  • Digestion and stools: 7 to 14 days after completing the transition
  • Energy levels: 2 to 3 weeks
  • Skin and coat: 4 to 6 weeks, as hair needs to grow to reflect the change
  • Joint mobility: 6 to 8 weeks of continuous glucosamine and chondroitin intake

4 to 6 weeks when stored correctly. After that, fats begin to oxidise and the food loses palatability and nutritional value.

For good storage, use the bag’s original closure rather than transferring the contents, keep it cool, dry and away from direct light, and never mix a new bag with leftovers from the previous one.

Yes, it is a good practice: it adds hydration and improves palatability for dogs with a poor appetite.

Adjust quantities to avoid overfeeding. If adding wet food, reduce dry food proportionally. As a guide, remove about 25 g of dry food for every 100 g of wet food added.
