Indicative ration. Always provide fresh water. Consult your vet.
Your dog’s digestive system needs between seven and ten days to adjust to a new formula. An abrupt change often causes loose stools or food refusal.
Mix one quarter Zen with the usual food. Check stools each morning.
Half and half. If stools become loose, stay at this stage for two more days before progressing.
By now, digestion should have settled completely.
Transition complete. Digestion settles within two weeks; coat shine appears around the fourth week.
What to know before switching to a hypoallergenic diet.
A novel protein is one the dog has never eaten. Food allergies arise through sensitisation: the immune system reacts to proteins it knows and has identified as a threat.
Chicken, beef and lamb are the most common dog-food proteins, so they also cause the most reactions. Using an unfamiliar source removes cross-reaction risk and gives the immune system time to settle.
The most common signs affect skin and digestion:
Diagnosis requires an 8–12 week elimination diet supervised by a vet. Blood food-allergy tests have limited reliability and do not replace an elimination diet.
Skin takes time because it must complete its renewal cycle. Usual timeframes are:
During this time give no other food: no treats, leftovers or flavoured supplements. One slip restarts the process.
Only if they use the same single protein as the main food. Most commercial treats contain chicken or poultry derivatives, even when not highlighted on the pack.
A practical, risk-free alternative is using the food’s own kibble as training rewards, reserving part of the daily ration for this.
